The speed, flight pattern and general jizz suggested Ruff. Was also pretty sure the paler grey neck patch was indeed a ruff or remnant of.
The heronry which I recorded earlier in the year near the main road was difficult to survey and no doubt there were more birds hidden out of sight. Two of the adults were sitting on nests ?
